What does the Bible say about honouring your parents?
Honouring father and mother is the first commandment with a promise, and it continues into adulthood as care and respect, even when relationships are hard.
What Scripture says
Exodus 20:12
““Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which the LORD your God gives you.”
Ephesians 6:1-3
“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with a promise: “that it may be well with you, and you may live long on the earth.””
Proverbs 23:22
“Listen to your father who gave you life, and don’t despise your mother when she is old.”
1 Timothy 5:4
“But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let them learn first to show piety toward their own family and to repay their parents, for this is acceptable in the sight of God.”
